Memorial Events
In 1996 Secretary of Commerce Ronald H. Brown led a trade delegation to Southeast Europe that sought to promote democracy, peace and stability by revitalizing international trade and commercial ties between the countries of the region and the United States. Sadly, that mission ended in tragedy. The grievous loss to family, colleagues and friends was compounded by the loss to the United States and to the region of government and business leaders dedicated to building long-term ties between nations.
Every year since that fateful day in 1996, Croatians and Americans will remember Secretary Brown and his colleagues with a memorial service in Dubrovnik and a hike to lay flowers at the crash site memorial. The memorial service usually takes place on the anniversary of the tragedy, April 3.
